Hold onto your hats. Parking meter rates are scheduled to increase in Back Bay and the Seaport in the next month. The goal behind this price jump is to open up parking for the city. Marty Walsh has worked with the city to develop a one year pilot initiative to help open up parking spots and make them easier to manage. The idea is that increased prices will encourage people to move to parking their cars in garages for part of the day, allowing more people to have a turn using street parking-think musical chairs for parking.

Here’s the breakdown for the how the increased spaces will affect these two areas.

Back Bay

  • approximately 1,650 spaces will be affected
  • around 90% of parking spaces on the streets are being occupied during the day-this initiative will hopefully open some of these spaces up

Seaport

  • all meters are scheduled to be prices at $1.50 per hour
  • prices will raise 50 cents every two months
  • will affect around 591 meters
  • minimum price for the meters will be $1 an hour and maximum price per meter will be $4 per hour
