For Bostonians, Marathon Monday is an annual tradition that occurs on Patriots’ Day. Schools are out for the day, most businesses shut their doors, and the city is engulfed by a sea of runners and onlookers. This can bring much traffic for those driving into the city. In fact, while the marathon is one of the best days for Boston, it will most likely put a strain on your commute. Here’s what to expect.
MBTA
The Copley station will be closed all day on Monday. Some Green Line stations will also be closed from 10am-6pm to avoid the rush of the crowds. More information can be found here.
Commuter Rail
The commuter rail will be running on regular scheduling with two additional trains running on the Framingham/Worcester line to accommodate the increase in people coming into the city.
Bikers
If you bike to work, you will not be allowed on the marathon route for the duration of the race. You will also not be allowed to bring bikes onto any MBTA trains during the day.
It’s best to play it safe and give yourself some extra time to get to your destination on Monday! And if you are still planning on driving into the city, it’s definitely the time to use SPOT!
