Boston’s elderly population is on the rise. In 2010, 14% of Boston residents were 60 years or older, representing 80,000 people, and this number is expected to increase to 130,000 by 2030. With the need growing for more accessible initiatives and projects for this group of people, Boston entrepreneurs have started innovating. The following are the top four startups that are serving the elderly.
Rendever
This Cambridge based startup is working to bridge the gap of loneliness and isolation that most elderly people start to feel at some point. By bringing VR into assisted living homes, residents can visit places like their childhood homes, attend events, and experience places they otherwise would not have access to.
Kinto
This app helps caretakers care for their loved ones with less stress. By supplying information about Medicare, home safety, healthy living as well as connecting them to other caretakers in similar situations, this app enhances the process for the all parties involved.
Full Circle
This startup helps connect the elderly to children. Based on the mentality that children can benefit from time spent with the elderly, Full Circle works to connect elderly volunteers with centers such as preschools and daycares.
CareAcademy
This startup provides online classes for caregivers to help them take better care of their loved ones. Classes range from enhancing communication with the elderly to preventing falls.
A special shout out to Wunder, a recently accepted MassChallenge startup founded by an Emerson College graduate, that is developing a comfortable underwear that can replace adult diapers for elderly women.
