It has been 38 years since the last solar eclipse. Protective glasses are sold out across the country. Flights have been booked to states such as Oregon and South Carolina. For all the Bostonians who were not able to leave the city, I have some good news for you. You will still be able to view the sun covering 63.1% of the moon. For all the procrastinators out there who haven’t purchased the appropriate eyewear for the big show, here is a list of glasses that can be made with everyday items.
Cereal Box
First empty a cereal box. Then, cut out the bottom and replace it with a piece of paper. Next, cut out the top of the box and replace it with aluminum foil. Take a push pin or another sharp object and poke in two holes to use as your lens.
Your Fingers
Create “waffle fingers” by crosshatching your fingers to make little holes. Then, project the sun’s rays into a sidewalk or other surface to view it. Do not look directly at the sun through your fingers.
Kitchen Items
Find any kitchen item with holes. A cheese grater, serving spoon with holes, or colander will work. Then use these items to project the sun onto the sidewalk or another surface.
No matter what your plans surrounding the eclipse are, you definitely don’t want to be the only one left out. Pack a lunch, grab some friends, head outside and catch a glimpse of one of Earth’s coolest phenomenons.
